The re-election of Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has entered a legal battle after the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) filed separate petitions challenging the outcome of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
The two petitions were displayed on the notice board of the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Osogbo on Monday, formally commencing the tribunal process.
The APC petition, marked EPT/OS/GOV/01/2026, was filed by the party’s governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji. He listed Governor Adeleke, the Accord Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as respondents.
The PDP’s petition, marked EPT/OS/GOV/02/2026, was filed by Adebayo Olugbenga Adedamola against Adeleke, INEC and the Accord Party.
Adeleke, who contested the election on the platform of the Accord Party, was declared the winner after polling 511,067 votes, while Oyebamiji of the APC finished second with 444,815 votes.
The development came after reports that no petition had been filed before the expiration of the 21-day period for challenging the election result. However, the subsequent display of the two petitions confirmed that both the APC and PDP had approached the tribunal.
Details of the specific grounds contained in the petitions were not immediately available publicly.
The petitions now pave the way for legal proceedings over the August 15 election, with the tribunal expected to consider the parties’ respective claims and the responses from the respondents.
The case marks another post-election legal challenge in Osun, where governorship election results have repeatedly been subjected to litigation in previous election cycles.
