Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and National Vice Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Babachir Lawal, has criticized Nigeria’s two major political parties—the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—declaring that both will be defeated in the 2027 general elections.
Lawal made the remarks on Saturday while receiving Otunba Olayinka Braimoh, former governorship candidate of the Action Alliance (AA) in Kogi State, who formally joined the ADC.
He accused the APC of becoming “a haven for fugitives fleeing from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC),” adding that more patriotic Nigerians would soon join the ADC.
“It is my belief that more patriots will soon join us even as the PDP self-destructs and the APC becomes a haven for EFCC fugitives,” Lawal said.
The former SGF also took aim at the APC’s alleged electoral practices, accusing the ruling party of being “delusional” for believing it could manipulate election results in 2027.
“Their mantra is to write election results even before elections begin. This is pure delusion because it will not happen. Nigerians will back us to frustrate any criminal manipulation of the 2027 election results,” he stated.
Lawal, however, cautioned that not every defecting politician would be accepted into the ADC, stressing that the party would resist infiltration by individuals with corrupt tendencies.
“Not everyone defecting from other parties will be accepted, lest they corrupt our ideals with attitudes imbibed from their corrupt, undemocratic home parties,” he warned.
Describing the ADC as “a party of visionaries and patriots,” Lawal said the platform provides Nigerians with a viable alternative to the PDP and APC.
“Every patriotic Nigerian now understands that our country has reached the edge of a cliff. The ADC offers an opportunity to make a U-turn, recalibrate, and redirect our governance toward a progressive, people-centric system,” he said.
Lawal also criticized the Adamawa State Government under Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, accusing it of failing to deliver tangible development projects despite massive federal allocations.
“All we get from over six years of PDP governance is a couple of flyovers carrying scanty traffic despite billions of naira accruing to the state. Sometimes, I wonder whether the money leaves Abuja for Yola at all,” he remarked.
Lawal’s comments come as the ADC continues to position itself as a reform-driven alternative ahead of the 2027 elections, seeking to attract Nigerians dissatisfied with the current political order.
