‘All Has Been Said and Now All Is Done’ – Lionel Messi Bids Emotional Farewell to Argentina

Argentine football legend Lionel Messi has officially brought his international career to an end, expressing deep emotions as he said goodbye to the national team after more than two decades of representing his country.

The 39-year-old forward made his final appearance for Argentina on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, in a friendly match against Benin at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires. Messi scored a goal and provided two assists as Argentina secured a 3–0 victory.

Addressing the crowd after the match, Messi described the moment as the saddest day of his career, admitting that it would be painful not to return to represent his country. He also expressed pride in wearing Argentina’s jersey for more than 20 years and thanked his teammates, supporters and family for their unwavering support.

Messi’s international career began in 2005, and he leaves as Argentina’s all-time leading scorer, with 126 goals in 208 appearances. His remarkable journey included winning the 2021 and 2024 Copa América titles, the 2022 Finalissima and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

His retirement marks the end of a historic chapter in Argentine football, following years of triumphs, disappointments and eventual adoration from fans who watched him become one of the greatest players in the history of the game.

Although his international career has ended, Messi is expected to continue playing for Inter Miami at club level.
