The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a man, David Effiong, for allegedly causing a public disturbance while wearing full masquerade attire, despite the statewide ban on masquerade activities.
Effiong was apprehended on Tuesday after residents reported that the masquerader was constituting a nuisance and allegedly destroying property within the community. His arrest follows renewed enforcement of the state government’s directive outlawing all public masquerade displays.
Confirming the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare, said Effiong will be charged in court after investigations are concluded. He noted that many masqueraders across the state have increasingly become a menace despite repeated warnings.
The crackdown intensifies efforts by the state government to curb rising cases of intimidation, violence, and property destruction linked to masquerade activities. Governor Pastor Umo Eno recently ordered a statewide ban, directing security agencies to enforce compliance.
Police authorities said investigation into Effiong’s actions is ongoing and that he will be arraigned upon completion of the process.
