Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed reports claiming he made comments against former U.S. President Donald Trump, describing them as false and misleading.

Speaking during Tuesday’s plenary, Akpabio addressed the controversy surrounding Trump’s recent designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged persecution of Christians. He urged restraint, saying the Senate would only take an official position after being properly briefed by the federal government.

“Nigerians want us to take a position. But we won’t take a position until we know what the government is doing about it,” Akpabio stated.

The Senate President revealed that many social media users had tagged him, urging a personal response to Trump’s remarks. However, he stressed that such issues must follow due legislative process.

“Who am I to reply Trump?” he asked rhetorically, noting that the Senate would deliberate on the matter once formally presented before it.

His statement drew a swift response from Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who urged Akpabio to speak confidently on Nigeria’s behalf.

“We’re not afraid. Don’t be scared. I am a Nigerian. I am a parliamentarian. Nigeria is a sovereign nation,” Barau said.

Akpabio, however, reiterated that Trump’s remarks do not reflect the true situation in Nigeria, emphasizing the nation’s unity despite its challenges.

“All we need is peace,” he said, warning against fake news and narratives portraying Nigeria as divided along religious lines.

“This is necessary so that their breaking news doesn’t break Nigeria,” Akpabio added.
