Adamawa APC Welcomes Defection of 21 Council Chairmen, 226 Councillors from PDP

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Adamawa State, Ahmed Galadima, has welcomed the defection of 21 local government council chairmen and 226 councillors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.

Galadima described the development as a boost to the party’s grassroots support ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Thursday, October 22, 2026, through his media aide, Adamu Sambo, the APC candidate congratulated the defectors, saying their decision reflected political foresight and a shared commitment to the development of Adamawa State.

He said the movement of the council officials to the APC demonstrated their belief that the state’s future would be better served through unity, purposeful leadership and collective efforts towards development.

Galadima also commended Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for what he described as his inclusive leadership and ability to build bridges across political divides. He said the governor’s political engagements had contributed to the growing appeal of the APC in the state.

The APC candidate linked the defections to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, expressing optimism that the development would strengthen cooperation within the party and improve its capacity to address the needs of residents.

The defections became public on Tuesday, October 20, following the emergence of resignation letters submitted by several council chairmen to their respective PDP ward chairmen. The officials reportedly cited personal decisions and consultations with family members, political associates and other stakeholders as reasons for leaving the party.

Adamawa APC Publicity Secretary, Victor Dogo, confirmed that all 21 local government chairmen and 226 councillors had joined the party. He said their decision was influenced by their desire to align politically with Governor Fintiri, who defected from the PDP to the APC in February 2026.

The council officials had won their positions on the PDP platform during the local government elections held in June 2026, in which the party secured all 21 chairmanship seats and 226 councillorship positions in the state.

Reacting to the development, Adamawa PDP leaders maintained that the defections would not prevent the party from contesting strongly in the 2027 governorship election.

The political realignment marks a significant development in Adamawa State as parties begin preparations for the next general elections.
