The Abia State Signage and Advertising Agency (ABSSAA) has announced advertisement fees for candidates seeking to display campaign billboards, banners and other outdoor promotional materials ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The agency unveiled the fee structure on Wednesday during its 2026 Stakeholders’ Engagement Forum held in Aba.
Speaking at the event, ABSSAA’s Director of Strategy and Innovation, Ndubuisi Nwogwugwu, said governorship candidates in the state will pay ₦150 million to display campaign materials, while presidential candidates will be required to pay ₦200 million.
According to the agency, senatorial candidates will pay ₦100 million, House of Representatives candidates ₦50 million, while candidates contesting for seats in the Abia State House of Assembly will pay ₦20 million.
ABSSAA said the fees will cover the entire campaign and election period.
The agency added that House of Assembly candidates who are unable to pay the approved fee may opt for a joint campaign billboard featuring their photographs beneath those of their party’s governorship candidate.
It also warned that any campaign billboard erected without approval or found to violate regulatory standards, including those considered a threat to public safety or peace, would be dismantled or have its approval revoked.
Several states have introduced similar advertisement charges ahead of the 2027 elections, a development that has drawn criticism from some opposition political parties.
Reacting to the announcement, the Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abia State, Kalu Kalu, rejected the proposed fees, arguing that they are inconsistent with the provisions of the Electoral Act.
According to him, the charges could undermine the spending limits prescribed by law and compromise fairness in the electoral process.
