The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has promised to provide between 11 and 15 kilowatts of solar power on every Nigerian household’s roof within 11 months of assuming office if elected in the 2027 presidential election.
Adebayo made the pledge on Tuesday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, where he outlined his proposed approach to addressing Nigeria’s persistent electricity challenges.
He said his administration would establish solar-panel manufacturing factories across the country while training Nigerians to install, operate and maintain solar power systems.
According to Adebayo, he has previously worked on power-related issues and has experimented with solar technology in his hometown, where he claimed to have trained about 2,000 people. He also said he manufactures solar panels and lithium batteries, while sourcing inverters externally.
The SDP candidate proposed partnerships with countries including China, Turkey and India to establish solar-panel manufacturing plants in Nigeria. He said the initiative would not only expand electricity access but also create employment opportunities for Nigerians.
Adebayo said the proposed solar clusters could generate up to 32,000 megawatts of electricity, with the national grid serving as a backup system whenever a cluster experiences a failure.
He also said government should make strategic investments in critical sectors such as aviation and manufacturing through operating and maintenance arrangements rather than leaving such sectors entirely to private operators.
On energy security, Adebayo said a government under his leadership would prioritise domestic crude oil refining and tackle oil theft. He claimed that as much as 900,000 barrels of crude oil were still being stolen and argued that recovering the oil would improve supply without requiring additional government spending.
The solar proposal forms part of Adebayo’s broader 2027–2031 policy blueprint, which identifies distributed and renewable electricity generation as a major component of his proposed economic and infrastructure programme. His published manifesto also proposes a National Distributed Electricity Initiative to expand mini-grids and embedded power systems.
