Representation: Women make up half of Nigeria’s population, and it is important that their perspectives and interests are represented in the political process. Female political participation helps to ensure that policies and decisions reflect the needs and views of all members of society.
Improved governance: Research has shown that countries with higher levels of female political participation tend to have better governance outcomes, such as lower levels of corruption and more effective public service delivery.
Promotion of gender equality: Female political participation can help to promote gender equality by creating a more diverse and inclusive political system. This can result in more gender-sensitive policies and programs, as well as increased opportunities for women to participate in decision-making processes.
Enhanced democratic legitimacy: Female political participation is a key aspect of democratic representation, and it helps to ensure that all voices are heard in the political process. This enhances the legitimacy of the political system and strengthens public trust in government institutions.

Addresses gender-specific issues: Women often face unique challenges and barriers that are different from those faced by men. Female political participation helps to bring these issues to the forefront and ensure that they are addressed by policymakers.
In short, female political participation is important in Nigeria because it helps to promote representation, governance, equality, democratic legitimacy, and addresses gender-specific issues. By increasing the participation of women in politics, Nigeria can become a more inclusive and democratic society.
The action for better female inclusion and participation in the electoral process in Nigeria (ABIPIN) is a project by the Center For Women Studies and Intervention (CWSI) and Catholic Agency For Overseas Development (CAFOD). The project seeks to promote young female inclusion and participation in the electoral process in Nigeria come 2023.
