No fewer than 18 farmers have been killed, while several others sustained injuries, following an attack on Kawel village in Mushere District of Bokkos Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State.
The incident was confirmed to Daily Trust on Monday by the Bokkos Youth Leader, Christopher Luka, who said the attack occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday.
According to him, armed men invaded the community and opened fire on residents, leaving multiple casualties before fleeing the scene.
A youth leader in the area reportedly alerted him at about midnight, stating that over 20 people were shot during the attack, with 18 later confirmed dead.
“As soon as I was informed, I immediately contacted the security personnel stationed in Bokkos. They confirmed they had been alerted and were already moving to the affected community,” Luka said.
The attack reportedly comes less than five days after the killing of the District Head of Gwande in the same Bokkos LGA, Saf Samuel Alaket, who was ambushed along the Sha District axis bordering Daffo community while returning from a traditional council meeting.
Luka described the latest attack as unprovoked and urged security agencies to take swift and decisive action to prevent further escalation of violence in the area.
As of the time of filing this report, no official statement had been issued by security agencies. The spokespersons of the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alabo Alfred, and Operation Enduring Peace, Captain Polycarp Auta, had yet to respond to inquiries.
