The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has filed a three-count charge against politician and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, over alleged false publication and forgery.
In the charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/374/2025 before the Federal High Court in Abuja, Sowore and his media platform, Sahara Reporters, were accused of conspiring to forge a police signal and publishing false information against the Nigeria Police Force.
One of the counts alleged that Sowore and Sahara Reporters “on or about the 30th day of July, 2025, conspired between yourselves to commit a felony to wit forgery,” an offence said to be punishable under Section 1(2)(C) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, Cap M17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.
Another count alleged that the defendants forged a police wireless message purportedly signed by the Principal Staff Officer to the IGP.
The prosecution further accused Sowore of intentionally posting the forged police signal and other inciting materials on his Facebook page on July 31, 2025, with the alleged intent to provoke members of the force and the public into mutiny against the Federal Government — an offence said to contravene Section 114 of the Penal Code.
Sowore was expected to be arraigned on Wednesday, but the session was stalled due to the prosecution’s inability to serve the charge on Sahara Reporters, listed as the second defendant.
Prosecuting counsel, Wisdom Madaki, informed the court that efforts were ongoing to serve the second defendant through substituted means, including newspaper publication. He subsequently applied for an adjournment.
Justice Emeka Nwite granted the request and adjourned the matter to September 15 for arraignment.
