The White House was placed on lockdown on Wednesday following a shooting involving U.S. National Guard members near Washington, D.C., raising security concerns in the capital.
The incident occurred near Farragut Metro Station, coinciding with a controversial troop deployment to the city ordered by President Donald Trump.
In a post on X, the DC Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers were on the scene and advised the public to avoid the area.
While official casualty figures remain unconfirmed, law enforcement sources told the Associated Press that two National Guard members were shot, though another source cited by the New York Times said only one member was injured. Details surrounding the shooting are still unclear.
“The White House is aware and actively monitoring this tragic situation,” said Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, adding that President Trump has been briefed.
National Guard troops have been stationed in Washington, D.C., for several months as part of Trump’s initiative to combat crime in the city. The deployment has drawn criticism from multiple state governors, who called it “cruel and purposefully inflammatory.”
