The United States Embassy in Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General Lagos will be closed on Monday, February 16, 2026, in observance of Presidents’ Day.

The US Mission in Nigeria announced the closure in a statement shared on its official X account on Sunday, noting that normal consular and embassy services will resume after the public holiday.

According to the mission, Presidents’ Day was originally established to honour the birthday of George Washington, but has since evolved into a broader celebration of all American presidents and their contributions to the history and global influence of the United States.

The holiday, observed annually in the United States, recognises presidential leadership and national development. Washington, in particular, is credited with creating the first Badge of Military Merit, which later inspired the Purple Heart military decoration still associated with his legacy.
