Iran has suffered a major blow to its political and military leadership following coordinated airstrikes by the United States and Israel that killed former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and Chief of Staff Abdolrahim Mousavi in rapid succession.
The strike that targeted Ahmadinejad occurred at his residence in the Narmak district of northeast Tehran, killing him along with several members of his security detail, according to Iran’s semi-official Iranian Labour News Agency. Ahmadinejad, who served as president from 2005 to 2013, later held key positions including membership in the Expediency Discernment Council, advising the Supreme Leader and mediating disputes within Iran’s governing institutions.
Barely 24 hours after Khamenei’s confirmed death, Iran’s Chief of Staff, Abdolrahim Mousavi, a central figure in the country’s military command, was killed in a fresh round of strikes. State television confirmed Mousavi’s death, highlighting the profound impact on Iran’s defense hierarchy. Analysts have warned that the successive loss of the country’s top leadership could destabilize Iran’s strategic posture and intensify regional tensions.
U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that military operations against Iran’s leadership will continue until the top military command is neutralized, signaling a likelihood of sustained conflict in the Middle East.
In response to the sudden vacuum, Mohammad Mokhber, a longtime aide to the late Supreme Leader, has been identified as the successor. A temporary leadership arrangement has been outlined, with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, and another senior legal official expected to oversee state affairs during the transition. Mokhber previously served as First Vice President from 2021 to 2024 and acted as interim president after the death of former President Ebrahim Raisi in 2024.
Security experts have warned that the removal of top leadership figures in quick succession may trigger significant shifts in Iran’s military and political strategy, with broad implications for regional stability.
