Despite repeated assurances by the Nigerian government and security agencies to end terrorism and banditry, armed groups continue to operate with impunity — openly displaying ransom money collected from abducted citizens and taunting state authority.
In the latest instance, a viral video posted by a notorious terrorist commander, Dangata Abba, showed him and his heavily armed gang members flaunting wads of cash allegedly obtained as ransom from kidnapped victims.
The video, which surfaced online this week, has drawn widespread outrage, amassing over 600,000 views, 14,700 likes, and 441 comments across multiple platforms, according to verification by SaharaReporters.
The footage underscores growing public frustration over the government’s inability to curb violent crimes, particularly in the North, where mass abductions and ransom payments have become common.
This is not the first time terrorists have mocked security efforts online. In July, SaharaReporters detailed how a terrorist in Kwara State hijacked the TikTok account of one of his abducted victims, using it to upload videos directly from his forest hideout.
The victim, a popular Point of Sale (POS) operator known as Yman, was kidnapped in late June 2025 alongside others in separate attacks across communities in Kwara North.
Following his abduction, the kidnappers reportedly began using his WhatsApp account to send distressing updates and ransom demands to his family.
The increasing online visibility of such criminal acts has fueled calls for stronger intelligence coordination, regulation of social media platforms, and more decisive government action to dismantle terrorist networks emboldened by ransom profits.
