At least two Nigerian soldiers have been killed after Boko Haram fighters launched a deadly attack on Rann, in Kala Balge Local Government Area of Borno State, in the early hours of Monday.
According to multiple sources quoted by Sahara Reporters, the insurgents overran a military base belonging to the CIO Battalion, setting armoured tanks ablaze and carting away an unspecified quantity of ammunition.
The fierce assault reportedly forced some surviving soldiers to abandon their posts and flee into neighbouring Cameroon, taking their weapons with them.
“They killed two of our soldiers and injured many others,” one source said. “Some who managed to escape fled with their arms into Cameroon.”
The attack is the latest in a series of deadly raids on military formations in Borno. A few months ago, 22 soldiers, including a commander, were killed in a Boko Haram strike on a base in Malam-Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area.
Nigeria has been battling Boko Haram insurgents since 2009, with the conflict claiming thousands of lives and displacing millions across Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe states.
While the military has repeatedly claimed that the terrorists have been largely defeated, soldiers on the frontline have often raised concerns about inadequate weaponry, saying they are outgunned by the militants.
