Senator I.D Gyang Calls for Security Reforms, Stronger Democratic Engagement
Former Senator Istifanus D. Gyang has reaffirmed his commitment to national development, security reform, and responsible democratic engagement, drawing from decades of public service at both state and federal levels.
In a press statement, Gyang reflected on his career in governance, which began in the Plateau State civil service where he retired as a Permanent Secretary before serving in the House of Representatives from 2015 to 2019 and later in the Nigerian Senate between 2019 and 2023.
He explained that the responsibilities of lawmakers go beyond legislation, noting that representation and oversight are critical components aimed at improving the welfare of citizens.
Gyang also highlighted the role of the media in sustaining democratic governance, describing it as a vital watchdog that holds government accountable while keeping citizens informed on local and global developments.
“The media remains a crucial partner in democracy by amplifying the voices of ordinary Nigerians and promoting transparency in governance,” he stated.
Addressing the persistent security challenges in Plateau State and across Nigeria, the former lawmaker stressed that the primary responsibility of government, as provided in the Constitution, is the security and welfare of citizens. He therefore called for urgent and decisive measures to address insecurity.
Gyang advocated constitutional reforms that would grant states greater authority in managing security within their territories. According to him, decentralising certain aspects of security operations would enable quicker and more effective responses to emerging threats.
He also underscored the importance of community engagement and dialogue in tackling insecurity, noting that Nigeria’s diversity should be seen as a strength rather than a challenge when properly managed through inclusive cooperation among citizens.
The former senator further emphasised the need to strengthen the justice system, stressing that effective prosecution and accountability are necessary to end the cycle of impunity. He called for stronger collaboration among state governments, law enforcement agencies, and community leaders to enhance vigilance and intelligence gathering.
On electoral reforms, Gyang expressed confidence in ongoing efforts to improve the credibility and transparency of Nigeria’s electoral process, noting that such reforms are vital for sustaining public trust in democracy.
Speaking on national politics, he reaffirmed his commitment to democratic ideals, maintaining that Nigeria remains a pluralistic society where freedom of expression and political competition are guaranteed.
Gyang dismissed concerns about the emergence of a one-party state, stating that opposition voices remain active within the political space.
He also commended the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that recent economic reforms, including subsidy removal, have increased revenue allocations to states and strengthened their capacity to implement development projects and meet financial obligations such as salary payments.
Commenting on the political climate in Plateau State, the former senator expressed satisfaction with the level of unity within the All Progressives Congress in the state, describing the party’s adoption of consensus in internal processes as a sign of cohesion and shared commitment to progress.
He concluded by reiterating his determination to remain actively involved in national discourse and public service, whether in or out of office, while urging Nigerians to work collectively toward peace, security, economic growth, and the consolidation of democracy.
