The National Orthopaedic Hospital, Jos (NOH-Jos), has officially begun full-scale orthopaedic and trauma care services, marking a new phase in specialized healthcare delivery for the North Central region.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, during a press briefing held at the hospital’s conference hall and led by the Chief Medical Director, Professor Icha Inalegwu Onche.

Professor Onche described the commencement of full services as a major milestone in the hospital’s journey since its establishment in 2021, highlighting years of steady progress and collaboration with both the Federal and Plateau State governments.

“This day represents a significant achievement for us,” he said. “We serve the entire North Central zone — Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, Niger, and the FCT — and are grateful for the support that has brought us this far.”

He particularly commended the Plateau State Governor for his commitment to health development, noting that the state provided infrastructural support including road and water projects for the hospital. He also praised the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) for its mentorship, donation of equipment, and technical assistance.

Full Range of Services at NOH-Jos

The Director of Clinical Services, Dr. David W. Ngwan, outlined the hospital’s wide range of services designed to meet the growing demand for musculoskeletal and trauma care.

According to Dr. Ngwan, since the hospital began partial outpatient services in May 2025, it has recorded over 736 patient visits and currently has over 450 patients awaiting surgery.

Below is the list of full services now available at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Jos:

Outpatient Services – Continuous consultations and medical evaluations.
Accident and Emergency (Casualty) Unit – 24-hour emergency trauma care.
Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery – Specialized treatment for fractures, limb injuries, and reconstructive procedures.
Joint Replacement Surgeries – Hip, knee, and shoulder replacements (partial and total).
Spine Surgery – Comprehensive spinal treatments and corrective procedures.
Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction – Corrective orthopedic surgery for bone deformities and injuries.
Pediatric Orthopaedics – Specialized care for children with bone and joint conditions.
Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy – Treatment for sports injuries and minimally invasive joint procedures.
Physiotherapy Services – Rehabilitation and mobility improvement programs.
Prosthetics and Orthotics – Design and fitting of artificial limbs and orthopedic supports.
Pharmaceutical Services – On-site pharmacy for patient medication needs.
Medical Laboratory Services – Fully equipped diagnostic laboratory for both inpatients and outpatients.
Clinical Psychology and Medical Social Work – Mental health and social support for patients and staff.

Dr. Ngwan emphasized that the hospital’s mission is to “build a generation of mobile, pain-free, and functional people,” through excellent and sustainable clinical services.

In a goodwill message, the Chief Medical Director of Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), Dr. Pokop W. Bupwatda, congratulated Prof. Onche and his management team for achieving this landmark, noting that JUTH remains committed to supporting NOH-Jos in training, research, and clinical collaboration.

The event ended with a vote of thanks by the Director of Administration, Mr. Gideon Nchoka Adamu, followed by a facility tour showcasing the hospital’s wards, theatre, laboratories, and emergency units.

With the commencement of these services, the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Jos is set to become a center of excellence in orthopaedic and trauma care, serving as a beacon of specialized healthcare for the entire North Central region and beyond.
