An old video showing Monday Okpebholo allegedly warning Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, against visiting the state without prior notice has resurfaced online following the reported gun attack on political figures in Edo.
The clip, recorded on July 18, 2025 during a political event in Uromi, Edo State, shows the governor declaring that Obi should inform him before entering the state, adding that his security could not be guaranteed otherwise.
In the roughly 58-second video now circulating on social media, the governor warned that any consequences arising from such visits would be the former Anambra governor’s responsibility.
The footage began trending again on Tuesday after reports of a gun attack targeting Obi and other members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) at the residence of former Edo governor and state ADC chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun.
Videos recorded after the incident showed visible damage to vehicles in Obi’s convoy, including shattered windscreens and bullet marks.
Following the resurfaced clip, some social media users drew connections between the earlier remarks and the recent attack, urging authorities to ensure the safety of political actors in the state.
One user on X suggested the governor’s previous statement should not be ignored, warning that Obi’s security must be taken seriously.
Authorities have yet to officially link the resurfaced video to the attack, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
