A group of legislative lawyers under the Association of Legislative Drafting and Advocacy Practitioners (ALDRAP) has initiated steps to recall 26 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, including Speaker Martin Amaewhule, following the lawmakers’ impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The impeachment process, reported by Tori News on Thursday, accuses Governor Fubara of gross misconduct and financial misappropriation.

In a letter dated January 8, 2026, addressed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), ALDRAP demanded certified true copies (CTCs) of the voters’ register for all state constituencies in Rivers State, citing the association’s members as constituents with the legal right to initiate a recall.

The letter, signed by ALDRAP Secretary Dr. Tonye Clinton Jaja, SCN, stated:

“Contrary to the Supreme Court judgment of February 2025, which enjoined the members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to work in peaceful harmony with the Governor and exhaust amicable conflict resolution methods, the lawmakers have opted for belligerent approaches. Ironically, both the Governor and the legislators are members of the APC and ought to have resolved disputes internally.”

ALDRAP warned that it would approach the courts to obtain the CTCs if INEC fails to comply.

The lawyers also challenged the validity of the impeachment notice, calling it “dead on arrival” for two reasons: the letter addressed Governor Fubara incorrectly as “madam” and the constituents did not authorize the lawmakers to pursue impeachment.

“As a public interest organization, majority of whose members are constituents across all Rivers State constituencies, we reject the impeachment attempt as legally flawed and procedurally unauthorized,” ALDRAP added.

The development escalates the ongoing political tension in Rivers State, where Governor Fubara and the lawmakers involved belong to the same party, the APC, highlighting internal party disputes.
