Confusion as Labour Party Factions Clash Over Protest…
Abuja — Civil society groups aligned with the Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) staged a protest on Wednesday at the National Headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), demanding the inclusion of LP candidates in the forthcoming nationwide bye-elections.
The demonstrators, who converged at the premises around 11:00 a.m., held placards with inscriptions such as: “INEC, who is using you against LP,” “Mahmood, stop destroying democracy in Nigeria,” and “Tell INEC to obey court orders.”
The protest, though peaceful, has deepened the crisis within the Labour Party, as the interim leadership led by Senator Nenadi Usman distanced itself from the action.
In a statement signed by Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to Senator Usman, the party disowned the protest, describing its organisers as “impostors” and “political impersonators.”
As of press time, INEC has yet to officially respond to the protest or the conflicting claims from the LP factions.
