Plateau Govt Flags Off Construction of Key Rural Roads in Mikang, Pankshin LGAs

Respite has come to residents of Wokkos community in Pankshin Local Government Area and Piapun–Tunkus communities in Mikang Local Government Area as the Plateau State Government has flagged off the construction of critical rural road projects aimed at boosting access, agriculture, and economic activities.

The projects include the Lifidi–Piapung–Tunkus Road (16.2km), Piapun–Baltep Road (13.3km) in Mikang LGA, and the Wokkos District Road (8.2km) in Pankshin LGA. The flag-off ceremonies were held on Monday, February 9, 2026, in the respective local government areas, with contractors immediately mobilising to site and commencing ground clearance.

Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, who was represented at the events by the Commissioner for Works, Hon. Joshua Laven Ubandoma, described the road projects as a demonstration of the administration’s commitment to inclusive development and rewarding communities for their support and unity.

Ubandoma said the governor was personally committed to the projects, describing them as signature initiatives under the current administration. He noted that the roads were long overdue and would unlock the agricultural and economic potential of the benefiting communities.

“These roads are critical to food production, economic empowerment, and social integration. This government is deliberate about opening up rural communities and ensuring that development gets to the grassroots,” the commissioner said.

He charged the contractors, Jon Global Limited, to adhere strictly to project specifications, stressing that the roads would be closely monitored by government officials, community leaders, and other stakeholders to ensure quality delivery. He also urged the contractors to engage local youths during construction to create jobs and build skills within the communities.

Speaking at the flag-off of the Lifidi–Piapung–Tunkus Road, the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Hon. Daniel Naanlong Gapyil, described the project as a legacy intervention that would transform the economy of Mikang LGA.

According to him, over 80 percent of the people in the area are farmers who depend on access roads to transport their produce to markets. He noted that the project would enhance revenue generation, promote unity, and open up new opportunities for the local government.

“For us in Mikang, this is a dream come true. This road has been in our budget and aspirations for years, and today, we are witnessing its actualisation,” Gapyil said.

The Executive Chairman of Mikang LGA, Hon. Dr. Bernard Soepding Alkali, also expressed gratitude to the state government, describing the project as a historic breakthrough for the local government.

“This road is a priceless gift to our people. It will improve inter-community trade, boost agricultural productivity, and change the economic fortunes of Mikang,” Alkali said.

At the flag-off of the Wokkos District Road in Pankshin LGA, former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly and member representing Pankshin South Constituency, Rt. Hon. Dewan Kudangbena Gabriel, described the project as a fulfilment of a promise made by Governor Mutfwang.

“This is a promise made and a promise kept. The construction of the Pankshin–Wokkos Road is a lasting legacy to our people and a testimony that sincere commitments are never forgotten,” Gabriel said.

Also speaking, the Executive Chairman of Pankshin LGA, Hon. Felix Amos Gonung, thanked the governor for delivering on his campaign promises and addressing the long-neglected needs of rural communities.

Community leaders and residents across Mikang and Pankshin LGAs hailed the projects, describing them as life-changing interventions that would improve access, security, agriculture, and economic activities.

The newly flagged-off roads are part of 10 new road projects initiated by the Mutfwang administration, in addition to the ongoing rehabilitation of 45 previously abandoned road projects across Plateau State.
