Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Nkanu Nnamdi, the son of renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
In a post on X, Obi said he had been aware of the child’s health condition days before his passing. He disclosed that Chimamanda personally informed him of Nkanu’s illness on January 2, noting that he followed developments closely with prayers and hope for the child’s recovery.
According to Obi, the news of Nkanu’s death was deeply painful and left him heartbroken, particularly as he reflected on the grief of Chimamanda as a mother. He also extended his condolences to her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege, and the entire family.
He described the loss as one no parent should ever have to endure and prayed for God’s strength, comfort, and grace to sustain the family during the period of mourning. Obi further prayed for the peaceful repose of the child’s soul.
Nkanu, aged one year and nine months, reportedly died on January 7 after a brief illness. The family confirmed the death in a statement, describing it as a devastating loss, and appealed for privacy and prayers as they grieve.
Chimamanda and her husband are also parents to a daughter born in 2016 and Nkanu’s surviving twin brother.
