Peter Obi Hails D’Tigress After Historic Fifth AfroBasket Title

Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has congratulated Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their remarkable triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.

In a statement released on Monday titled “MISSION V ACCOMPLISHED,” Obi described the team’s fifth consecutive AfroBasket title as a resounding testament to resilience, unity, and the enduring spirit of Nigerian athletes.

“Congratulations, D’Tigress! You’ve once again proven yourselves as the undisputed queens of African basketball,” Obi said. “Your victory is not just a win for Nigeria, but for the entire continent. To dominate this tournament five times in a row is no small feat — you’ve etched your names in history.”

Obi praised the players for their passion and consistency, calling them “fearless, fast, and unstoppable,” and commended their unwavering commitment throughout the tournament.

“Thank you for pouring your hearts into every game and showing the world the strength of Nigerian excellence. Your effort, courage, and unity on the court were truly exceptional,” he added.

He also applauded Head Coach Rena Wakama for her leadership and vision, noting that her discipline and championship mindset played a crucial role in the team’s success. “To Coach Wakama, thank you for your vision, discipline, and championship mindset. You’ve led these amazing women with grace and determination,” Obi said.

D’Tigress secured the title on Sunday, August 3, after a dominant 78–64 victory over Mali in the final held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The win marks Nigeria’s fifth straight AfroBasket championship, an unprecedented achievement in the history of the competition.
