Some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday staged a protest at the United States Embassy in Abuja, calling for international intervention to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy.
The protesters, who also visited the European Union (EU) complex and the Ministry of Justice, submitted protest letters urging global and local authorities to take action against what they described as an emerging one-party system in the country.
Carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Save Nigeria’s Democracy” and “Protect the Judiciary from Political Interference,” the demonstrators accused the ruling party of using intimidation tactics to weaken the opposition.
They warned that Nigeria was “gradually drifting toward a one-party state” and called on the U.S., EU, and Ministry of Justice to help preserve the nation’s democratic institutions and ensure fair political competition.
The protest drew attention from passersby and security personnel, though it remained peaceful throughout.
