Veteran Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde has opened up on how she navigated a ban placed on her and several other top actors by movie marketers in 2005, describing the episode as a major turning point in her career.
Omotola spoke during an interview on Yanga FM Nigeria, where she recalled that the decision affected eight leading faces in the industry at the time.
According to her, those involved included herself, Genevieve Nnaji, Ramsey Nouah, Jim Iyke, Stella Damasus, Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD), Nkem Owoh, and one other actor.
She explained that the group was restricted from working with certain movie marketers, a move that significantly limited their involvement in film projects during that period.
The actress said the marketers claimed the affected actors were having a negative impact on the industry. However, she insisted the real issue stemmed from their insistence on improved quality and higher standards in filmmaking.
Omotola noted that the ban did not last the same length of time for everyone involved. While some of the actors were gradually allowed back after about a year, her own restriction lingered longer.
She attributed the prolonged ban to her absence from a meeting organised by the marketers to resolve the dispute, explaining that missing the meeting further strained her relationship with those enforcing the ban.
Despite the setback, Omotola said she refused to remain idle during the period. She ventured into music and released her first album, using the break from acting to explore another aspect of her creativity.
She also focused on business outside the entertainment industry, paying attention to her investments and engaging in property-related ventures.
Reflecting on the experience, Omotola said the period helped her grow in other areas and pushed her to explore new paths rather than dwell on what she could not control.
Recounting the incident, she said, “The first eight were me, Genevieve, Ramsey Nouah, Jim Iyke, Stella Damasus, RMD, Nkem Owoh, and one other person. We were eight; they just banned us.”
She added that the ban did not stop her from moving forward, but instead shaped her resilience and versatility beyond acting.
