The trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), resumed on Monday at the Federal High Court in Abuja after Justice Binta Nyako agreed to continue presiding over the case.
Kanu, who has been in detention since his extraordinary rendition from Kenya in 2021, arrived at the court amid heightened expectations.
Justice Nyako had previously stepped down from the case on September 24, 2024, after Kanu requested her recusal, citing a lack of confidence in her ability to ensure a fair trial.
Following her decision, the case file was returned to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho, who subsequently reassigned it back to Nyako.
Kanu’s brother, Kanunta Kanu, confirmed his presence in court via a video posted on X, captioned: “10th of February 2025 #MaziNnamdiKanu live at dishonorable Justice Binta Nyako’s court in Abuja, Nigeria.”
Kanu is currently facing terrorism charges leveled against him by the federal government.
