The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has filed a ₦60 billion lawsuit against political commentator and staunch Tinubu supporter, Reno Omokri, over what his legal team described as “highly defamatory and prejudicial” publications.

Kanu’s special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed the development in a post via X (formerly Twitter), stating that the suit was filed at the High Court of Enugu State.

According to the writ of summons, the IPOB leader is demanding:

  • ₦50 billion in general damages for defamation, including alleged injury to his reputation, emotional distress, and prejudice to ongoing judicial proceedings;
  • ₦10 billion in aggravated damages for what he described as the “malicious and reckless publication of false statements” by Omokri;
  • A public retraction and apology to be published in two national dailies and on Omokri’s official X (Twitter) account;
  • A perpetual injunction restraining Omokri and his associates from further making or publishing defamatory statements about him;
  • Payment of legal costs and 10% annual interest on monetary awards from the date of judgment until full settlement.

Ejimakor, in his statement, warned others who may be toeing a similar path to take heed.

“Yesterday, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu commenced a muscular legal action against Reno Omokri (@renoomokri), seeking a retraction, apology & damages for Omokri’s highly defamatory & prejudicial publications against Mazi Kanu, IPOB & #Ndigbo. Others like Omokri should take note & be guided,” he posted.

As of the time of this report, Omokri has not issued a formal response to the suit.
