Aondoaver Asom, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, has died after sustaining gunshot wounds during an armed robbery attack in Benue State.

According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the officer, who was attached to the Ops Zenda Joint Task Force (JTF), was travelling in a commercial vehicle to his new duty post on February 24 when the vehicle was ambushed by suspected robbers at Amile, along the Ugbema–Jato-Aka road in Ushongo.

During the attack, the officer reportedly engaged the assailants in an effort to protect fellow passengers and is said to have neutralised three of them. However, he sustained serious gunshot injuries in the exchange.

He and another injured passenger were rushed to the General Hospital in Gboko, where he was later confirmed dead while receiving treatment. The other victim is reportedly responding to care.

Authorities recovered the officer’s service rifle, while his remains have been deposited at the hospital mortuary. The police have since praised his actions, describing them as a courageous attempt to defend lives in the face of danger.
