The Federal Government has released ₦2.3 billion to settle outstanding salary and promotion arrears owed to university lecturers across the country.

The Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, confirmed this on Wednesday while giving an update on the government’s ongoing engagements with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other tertiary institution unions.

According to a statement issued by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press, Federal Ministry of Education, Alausa said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to resolving all lingering welfare and funding issues in the education sector in a transparent, fair, and sustainable manner.

The minister explained that the disbursement, processed through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, represents Batch 8 of the payments and reflects the administration’s determination to clear inherited backlogs while improving the welfare of both academic and non-academic staff.

“A total of ₦2.311 billion, representing Batch 8 salary and promotion arrears, has been released through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation to universities. Benefiting institutions should begin to receive payment alerts anytime from now,” Alausa said.

He assured that the Federal Government will continue to prioritize the education sector and foster a stable academic environment across all tertiary institutions in the country.
