Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has reacted to the case of soldiers reportedly detained over an alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Sowore spoke on Friday during a press conference organised by wives of the detained soldiers, who appealed to the government to either charge their husbands to court or release them.

According to the activist, information gathered from the families of about 120 detained military officers suggests there is no evidence to support claims of a coup attempt.

He alleged that some senior military officials may be using the situation to gain favour with the president.

“What we have gathered from the families of the 120 detained military officers is that there’s no evidence of any coup,” Sowore said.

“It’s just some high-level officials who are trying to buy the loyalty of President Tinubu and create a fear factor. That’s how they control people in power.”

Sowore added that he and other advocates would continue to push for justice in the matter.

“We are here to ensure that justice is done no matter what it takes. I have experienced many instances where people are accused of plotting a coup that they never did,” he said.
