The Plateau State Police Command has reassured residents of sustained security and heightened vigilance following rising global tensions stemming from the reported conflict between the United States and Iran.
The tensions escalated after the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and several senior officials, triggering protests in parts of Nigeria by members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shi’ites.
In a proactive move to prevent any breakdown of law and order, the state police command said it has reinforced intelligence-led policing strategies across Plateau State in collaboration with other security agencies.
In a statement issued Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, the command noted that although the security situation in Plateau remains stable, surveillance has been heightened and intelligence gathering intensified.
The statement further disclosed that the command has strengthened engagement with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and other key stakeholders across the state. Enhanced visibility policing and patrols have also been deployed around worship centres and public spaces to ensure swift response to any attempt to exploit global developments to incite unrest.
“While Plateau State remains stable and our internal security situation firmly under control, we have reinforced proactive, intelligence-led policing measures to guarantee continued peace and security,” Ewah stated.
The Commissioner of Police warned that the command would not allow Plateau State to become a theatre for foreign conflicts, stressing that any attempt to import external ideological or religious tensions would be met with the full weight of the law.
He urged residents to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, and to report suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police formation or through designated emergency numbers, reaffirming the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
