Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as Shiites, staged a protest in Niger State on Sunday following reports of the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
The IMN, led by Shi’a cleric Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, mobilised shortly after the news of Khamenei’s alleged killing in airstrikes attributed to the United States and Israel began circulating online.
Videos from the scene showed dozens of protesters marching through parts of the state while chanting slogans and waving Iranian flags. Some demonstrators were heard expressing solidarity with Iran, carrying placards bearing messages of support.
The demonstration appeared peaceful, though it drew attention amid heightened global tensions linked to developments in the Middle East.
As of the time of filing this report, Nigerian authorities had not issued an official statement on the protest.
