The Senate of Lagos State University (LASU) has suspended all academic and socio-academic activities, including the 2024/2025 second semester examinations, until further notice.

The resolution followed the ongoing indefinite strike by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of staff unions, comprising the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-LASU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU-LASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU-LASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT-LASU).

According to Vanguard, the university’s Senate reached the decision at a virtual meeting held on Saturday, August 2, 2025, and officially announced it on Sunday through a statement signed by the Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Mrs Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile.

The university had earlier scheduled the commencement of second semester examinations for Monday, August 4, 2025.

“The core demands of the Joint Action Committee are directed at the Lagos State Government. The University Management has, over the past few weeks, facilitated dialogue and pursued peaceful resolutions between the unions and the State Government,” the statement quoted Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, as saying.

The Senate clarified that while the strike is not directed at the university management, the institution was compelled to suspend operations in light of the disruption caused.

A high-level meeting chaired by the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro, was held on Friday, August 1, with representatives of the unions, university management, and relevant state ministries in attendance. All parties agreed to reconvene on Thursday, August 7, for further consultations.

As a result, the Senate announced:

“The 2024/2025 Second Semester Examinations, initially scheduled to commence on Monday, August 4, 2025, are hereby suspended, and all other activities in the university are on hold until further notice.”

All students have been directed to vacate university hostels by 6:00 a.m. on Monday, August 4.

The statement concluded by urging all members of the LASU community, particularly students, to remain calm and law-abiding as efforts continue to resolve the impasse.
