The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora has confirmed that armed assailants invaded St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Niger State, in the early hours of Friday, November 21, 2025, abducting students, teachers, and a security guard.
In an official statement issued on Friday, the Diocese said the attackers struck “between 1:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m.,” leaving the school community in fear and distress. A security personnel was also reported to have been severely shot during the incident.
The Diocese condemned the attack and expressed “deep concern for the safety of the kidnapped children and their families,” adding that the assault once again highlights the rising insecurity faced by educational institutions across the region.
According to the statement, security agencies were promptly alerted and have begun coordinated operations aimed at securing the safe rescue and return of the abducted victims.
The Bishop of Kontagora assured the public that the church is working closely with security agencies, community leaders, and government authorities to address the situation. He urged residents to remain calm, cooperate with investigators, and continue to pray for the victims.
“The Diocese calls on the public to remain calm, support security efforts, and continue praying for the safe and quick return of all abducted,” the statement read.
The Diocese added that further updates will be provided as more verified information becomes available.
The statement closed with a prayer: “May the Lord grant quick release to those abducted and continue to protect His people from all danger.”
