A resident of Kanam Local Government Area in Plateau State, Tarub Salim Dugub, has criticised the council chairman, Salihu Ayuba Musa, over what he described as neglect of the community and failure to address worsening insecurity.
Dugub alleged that the chairman has been residing in Jos rather than within the local government, leaving residents exposed to attacks by armed groups. He argued that, as chief security officer of the council, the chairman ought to remain close to the people during periods of crisis.
In an open letter dated Tuesday, February 17, Dugub expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation, citing a recent attack by suspected bandits on Garga town on Monday evening. The incident reportedly left several people dead, others injured, and houses destroyed.
Titled “Hon. Ayuba Salihu Musa, it’s time to return to your people,” the letter accused the chairman of limiting his involvement to condolence visits after attacks rather than taking proactive measures to prevent them.
Dugub maintained that the persistent violence in Kanam demands the chairman’s constant presence to reassure residents, coordinate security responses, and engage directly with stakeholders. He added that effective leadership during insecurity requires visible action and close interaction with affected communities.
He further urged the chairman to return to the local government to strengthen collaboration with security agencies and provide accurate on-the-ground reports to Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang for prompt intervention.
According to him, sustained absence by elected leaders during crises risks deepening fear and weakening public confidence in government protection.
