Militants belonging to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have claimed responsibility for a major assault on a Nigerian Army base and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) near Mainte in Borno State.
The claim was shared on Wednesday by security analyst Brant (@BrantPhilip_) on X.
According to ISWAP, the attack resulted in the k!lling of at least 15 soldiers and CJTF operatives, the destruction of the base, and the burning of seven vehicles. The group also claimed to have seized several weapons during the assault.
The announcement has triggered widespread reactions on social media.
One user, Crespo, expressed shock and disbelief, writing:
“15 soldiers k!ll£d or what did I just read? Please tell us this is not true. We can’t continue like this, and who’s leaking military movement to the public?”
Others questioned the accuracy of the claims.
Pforpeelyidk1 asked whether an entire base was targeted or only a specific position, suggesting the report might be exaggerated to promote pro-militia narratives.
Another user, SleazyUd, criticised the general security situation, saying:
“What are those soldiers doing? They are always sitting ducks waiting to defend all the time.”
As of the time of reporting, the Nigerian Army has not confirmed the details of the alleged attack.
