A viral video has sparked debate on social media platform X after showing women kneeling before their husbands during a church program meant to celebrate them.
In the clip, the husbands were seen sitting while their wives knelt in front of them as part of the event’s proceedings. The moment, which was intended to honour the women, drew mixed reactions online.
A male X user who shared the video questioned the practice, expressing disbelief at how those being celebrated were made to kneel before their partners.
“You people that are supposedly being celebrated also knelt down happily, while the person that is celebrating you is sitting down? How cute,” he wrote sarcastically.
His post triggered widespread discussion, with many users criticising the cultural norm that often associates respect and submission with women kneeling before men.
A female user responded:
“Someone said marriage is a humiliation ritual for women… I wanted to get angry at first but when I think am well well I just mute.”
Other Nigerians also weighed in, calling for a re-examination of traditions that reinforce gender inequality, especially in public or religious ceremonies.
