A respected elder statesman and political figure, Nanven Nimfel, has been celebrated as he marks his 70th birthday, with tributes highlighting his humility, detribalised leadership style, and decades of principled service in Nigerian politics.

In a tribute reflecting on his life and influence, Professor Elias Nankap Lamle described Nimfel as a quiet but impactful leader whose life has consistently demonstrated integrity, unity, and commitment to humanity beyond ethnic or religious divides.

According to Lamle, his first encounter with Nimfel dates back to 1978 during a Christ Crusade fellowship outreach to Kadarako in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State. He recalled being received warmly by Nimfel’s family, noting that the hospitality and humility he experienced left a lasting impression.

Nimfel’s modest disposition, he noted, distinguished him even within the fellowship community, where his humility was often cited as exemplary by respected leaders.

Their paths crossed again in 1983 during the era of the Nigerian Peoples Party administration in Plateau State under Governor Solomon Lar. At the time, Nimfel served as Director of Research and Documentation for the party, while Lamle worked as a supervisory agent. Despite the intense political climate, Nimfel was described as meticulous, thoughtful, and grounded, maintaining grace and restraint.

Years later, both men reunited at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), where Nimfel participated in the Senior Executive Course while Lamle served as a facilitator. Lamle noted that despite differences in status and age, Nimfel remained warm, encouraging, and free from condescension.

Observers say Nimfel’s leadership philosophy stands out in Nigeria’s often polarised political landscape. Rather than aligning with ethnic or religious divisions, he has built relationships across social and cultural boundaries, offering assistance and mentorship without discrimination.

His political engagement has also been marked by intellectual depth and policy orientation. As Director of Research and Documentation during the NPP era, he emphasized the importance of ideas, documentation, and policy clarity in governance.

At 70, Nimfel is widely regarded not only for positions held but for the consistency of his character. Associates describe him as a leader who has bridged divides, promoted national consciousness, and maintained humility in public life.

Lamle noted that in an era when politics can be transactional and divisive, Nimfel’s life remains a reminder that public service can be sincere and guided by values.

“As he celebrates seventy years, his greatest legacy may not be what he has achieved, but the example he continues to set,” Lamle stated.

Nimfel’s milestone has prompted calls for emerging leaders to emulate his values of humility, inclusiveness, and principled engagement in public life.

Professor Lamle is a peacebuilding scholar at the Centre for Conflict Management and Peace Building, University of Jos, and a consultant on peacebuilding and climate resilience initiatives in Nigeria.

The celebration of Nimfel’s 70th birthday has become more than a personal milestone; it is being viewed as a moment to reflect on the enduring relevance of character-driven leadership in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
