The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has directed all public servants, political appointees, and government officials intending to contest elective positions in the next electoral cycle to resign by March 2026.
The directive was contained in a Government Special Announcement dated February 28, 2026, issued in compliance with the Electoral Act (Amendment) 2026.
The statement, signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, warned that any official planning to participate in party primaries or any stage of the electoral process must first vacate his or her position within the stipulated period or risk disqualification by electoral authorities.
According to the government, the measure is intended to ensure fairness, transparency, and a level playing field for all aspirants, while safeguarding the neutrality and integrity of public institutions.
It stressed that governance responsibilities must not be compromised by partisan political activities and directed all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to give the announcement wide publicity to ensure compliance.
