The Plateau State Government has moved swiftly to dispel widespread social media rumours alleging that Governor Caleb Mutfwang has defected to the Young Progressives Party (YPP).
The speculation, which gained traction online on Friday, sparked concern among residents and political watchers. However, the government has now categorically dismissed the claim as entirely false.
In an official statement issued in Jos, the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, Gyang Bere, described the viral report as “a blatant lie” and the handiwork of “desperate mischief makers” intent on misleading the public and causing unnecessary tension.
Bere said the story was nothing more than “a poorly scripted fabrication” that should ordinarily be ignored, but noted that the administration felt compelled to respond in order to prevent unsuspecting citizens from falling for the falsehood.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Governor Mutfwang has not defected to the Young Progressives Party,” Bere stressed. “Where and when there is any change in status, the Governor will use official and verified communication channels to inform the people of Plateau State and other well-wishers.”
He reaffirmed that Governor Mutfwang remains firmly focused on delivering his mandate, implementing people-centred projects, and driving key development initiatives across the state.
The government urged residents, supporters, and stakeholders to disregard the rumour entirely and stay vigilant against politically motivated misinformation.
According to the statement, Plateau State remains safe, stable, and progressing steadily “under Governor Mutfwang’s purposeful and visionary leadership.”
Bere further called for unity, encouraging citizens to remain committed to advancing the Plateau project and not be distracted by attempts to sow discord through fabricated narratives.
