The identities of the 177 worshippers abducted on Sunday, January 18, from three churches in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State have been released.
The disclosure followed earlier denials by the Kaduna State Police Command, which had dismissed reports of the abductions as false. Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, January 19, the Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Rabiu, challenged those reporting the incident to provide names and details of the alleged victims, insisting there was no record of such kidnappings.
The police position drew widespread criticism, including from Christian Solidarity Worldwide–Nigeria (CSW-N), which accused security agencies of obstructing independent verification of the incident. The group said soldiers prevented its team from accessing the affected community despite proper identification.
On Wednesday, January 21, Sebastine Barde, President of the Adara Development Association (ADA), released the names of the abducted worshippers. According to him, entire families were taken during the attack, including 13 members of the Amos family, 12 members of the Jonathan family, at least nine members of the Markus family, and six members of the Makudi family.
The oldest victim listed is 71-year-old Augustina Matthew, while the youngest is five-year-old Salvation Idris.
The attack occurred barely a week after the community reportedly paid N2.6 million ransom to secure the release of 20 residents previously kidnapped by bandits.
