The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed confidence that the lingering political crisis in Rivers State is close to being resolved following President Bola Tinubu’s latest intervention.
Wike spoke on Tuesday in Abuja after inspecting ongoing projects in the FCT, commending President Tinubu for stepping in to mediate between the executive and legislative arms of government in the state.
“I believe that by the grace of God, this will be the last time the president will be bothered with this issue and that this will be the last time the Rivers people will need to hear this kind of discord,” Wike said.
He described the president as a unifying figure whose counsel must be respected, stating, “The president is the father of the nation, and when a father speaks, his children must listen and do the needful to ensure peace and progress.”
Addressing expectations from both Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly, Wike expressed optimism that all parties would play their roles in sustaining peace.
“The House of Assembly will do what they are supposed to do, and I am confident that the governor will also carry out the acts required of him to ensure this peace is sustainable,” he added.
Wike stressed that stability and progress in Rivers State remain the priority, thanking the president for his “tireless commitment” to restoring harmony.
The crisis had intensified after the state assembly, widely seen as loyal to Wike, initiated impeachment moves against Governor Fubara. In a bid to broker peace, President Tinubu on Monday summoned both Wike and Fubara to the Presidential Villa for a high-level meeting aimed at resolving the feud.
