Simon Ekpa, the self-proclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Government in Exile, has been sentenced to six years in prison for terrorism-related offenses by a District Court in Finland.
Ekpa was arrested on 21 November 2024 by Finnish authorities after investigations by the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) linked him to incitement of terrorism and promotion of violence through social media. His activities were alleged to have fueled unrest in southeastern Nigeria.
Following his arrest, the Päijät-Häme District Court remanded him in custody, ruling that the case involved “public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent.” The alleged offenses spanned from August 2021 to November 2024.
During the investigation, the NBI froze Ekpa’s assets, along with those of his associates and related companies, as part of the proceedings.
