The Super Falcons of Nigeria secured a stunning 3-2 victory against the Matildas of Australia during their second group match at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Right from the kick-off, the Super Falcons showcased their defensive prowess while expertly controlling the ball against the hosts, who were dominating the early play.
However, Australia’s Van Egmond found an opening on the break and successfully converted a pass from Foord to put the home team ahead.
The lead did not last for long as Uchenna Kanu capitalized on a deflected shot from Ajibade to score an equalizer just before halftime.

The second half saw the Super Falcons maintain their resilient defensive stance, withstanding relentless pressure from the Australian team. In a decisive moment, Osinachi Ohale capitalized on a corner kick and found the net, propelling Nigeria ahead.
But the game’s turning point came when the Nigerian star Asisat Oshoala, initially believed to be sidelined due to injury concerns, was brought in by Head Coach Randy Waldrum to bolster the offensive threat.

Oshoala wasted no time making an impact, forcing a crucial corner kick that led to Ohale’s second goal, further extending the Super Falcons’ lead.
Oshoala’s true moment of brilliance came when she capitalized on a defensive lapse by Australia and scored what would eventually become the match-winning goal, securing Nigeria’s unexpected triumph over the host nation.
Football fans across Nigeria showered praise upon Oshoala for her outstanding performance, hailing her as the game-changer who emerged from the bench to steer the Super Falcons to victory.
