The Federal Government of Nigeria has directed security agencies to arrest and prosecute individuals linked to alleged sexual assaults during a local festival in Ozoro, Delta State.

The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, gave the directive in a statement issued in Abuja by the ministry’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Ahmed Danbazau.

The move follows the circulation of a viral video showing incidents of alleged sexual assault during the Alue-Do Festival, a traditional event held in Ozoro, within Isoko North Local Government Area.

Expressing concern, the minister condemned reports that women were harassed and subjected to sexual violence during the festival, describing the situation as disturbing and unacceptable.

She commended the swift response of the Delta State Police Command, while calling for a transparent, thorough, and expedited investigation to ensure all those involved are brought to justice.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim stressed that such acts violate human dignity, public safety, and the rule of law, adding that no cultural or traditional practice can justify sexual violence.

She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting women and girls, noting that the ministry would collaborate with the Delta State Ministry of Women Affairs to provide victims with psychosocial support, medical care, and legal assistance.

The minister also called for greater engagement with community and traditional leaders to address harmful practices and prevent future occurrences, while urging the public to cooperate with authorities in ensuring justice is served.
