The Nigerian government is set to arraign former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai before the Federal High Court over allegations that he unlawfully intercepted the phone communications of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
Court documents filed on February 16, 2026, show that El-Rufai is facing three counts linked to alleged violations of cybercrime and communications laws.
According to the filing, the first count relates to remarks he reportedly made during a February 13 television appearance, in which he allegedly admitted that he and associates intercepted the NSA’s communications, an act said to contravene provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024.
The second count accuses him of knowingly associating with individuals involved in the alleged interception without reporting them to security agencies, while the third alleges the use of technical systems in a manner capable of compromising public safety and national security.
The charges were instituted by counsel representing the Department of State Services, including M.E. Ernest, O.M. Owan, U.M. Bulla, C.S. Eze and E.G. Orubor.
The court is expected to take up the matter in the coming days as the Federal Government proceeds with plans to prosecute the former governor.
