Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have called off their prolonged strike, which had crippled academic activities in primary schools since March 2025.

The strike was officially suspended on Tuesday, July 8, following the payment of the new minimum wage and five months’ arrears by the government.

In a communiqué issued after an emergency meeting held in Abuja, the FCT branch of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) directed all primary school teachers to resume work on Wednesday, July 9.

According to the union, the decision to suspend the strike came after the timely intervention of the FCT Minister, who facilitated discussions with key stakeholders to resolve the dispute. As part of the agreement reached, the government disbursed N16 billion from the Area Councils’ share of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to cover salaries and settle part of the outstanding arrears.

The NUT also announced that a special committee would be established within two weeks to reconcile the remaining entitlements and formulate a long-term strategy for sustainable funding of teachers’ salaries.

However, the union warned that it would not hesitate to resume the strike if the government fails to fulfill its obligations as agreed.

The NUT expressed appreciation to FCT teachers for their resilience and patience throughout the industrial action and extended gratitude to traditional rulers, civil society groups, and other stakeholders who supported their cause.
