Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has expressed concern over reports that Dangote fuel is being sold at a cheaper rate in Togo than in Nigeria.
Falana made the remark on Sunday during an interview on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, where he also cautioned the federal government against introducing policies that would worsen the economic hardship faced by citizens.
He specifically faulted the proposed 5 per cent fuel surcharge, warning that it would amount to multiple taxation for consumers.
“I guess the government wants to go back to the drawing table and ensure that it is not accused of multiple taxes or double taxation because consumers will pay VAT for buying fuel. They will now put an additional 5 per cent tax. I think this is what Nigerians are complaining about,” Falana said.
The Senior Advocate further cited reports that fuel from the Dangote refinery is cheaper in Togo by about ₦65 compared to prices in Nigeria, describing the situation as troubling.
“From what we just read today, the Dangote fuel taken from Nigeria is now cheaper in Togo than in Nigeria — I think about 65 naira. So, the government will have to review these developments (the proposed 5 per cent fuel surcharge) and ensure more hardship is not imposed on Nigerians,” he added.
