PDP NEC Zones 2027 Presidential Ticket to South, Confirms Damagum as National Chairman
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the Southern region of the country.
This was part of the resolutions reached at the end of the party’s 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Monday, August 25, 2025, in Abuja.
In a communique signed by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the NEC also ratified the appointment of Ambassador Iliya Umar Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the party until the November 2025 elective national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State.
According to the zoning arrangement approved by NEC, all national offices currently held in the North will remain in the North, while those in the South will remain in the South. With the chairmanship retained in the North, the party’s presidential ticket for 2027 has been zoned to the South. NEC further directed each region to immediately micro-zone positions within their respective regions.
The meeting also received updates from the Constitution Amendment Committee and directed that the draft be circulated to party organs and chapters for further input.
On national issues, NEC condemned what it described as the ruling All Progressives Congress’ (APC) resort to “state capture through intimidation, coercion, inducement, and violence,” citing the militarisation of recent bye-elections in Kaduna, Taraba, and Zamfara States. The PDP described the conduct of the APC as a threat to democracy and “a confirmation of its desire to turn Nigeria into a totalitarian one-party state.”
The communique reassured Nigerians of the PDP’s commitment to protecting democracy and the welfare of citizens, adding that the party remains determined to reclaim power in 2027.
The NEC also confirmed that its 103rd meeting will hold on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, ahead of the national convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan.
